Blue Ameraucana

True Ameraucana

Ameraucanas:

The true Ameraucana is an APA recognized breed of chicken developed in the United States. The Ameraucana is often confused with other chicken breeds, especially the Araucana and Easter Egger chickens (sometimes labeled Americanas). While similar, these three are separate breeds, and only two are recognized by the American Poultry Association. True Ameraucanas are rare.

Ameraucanas have muffs and beards, slate colored legs, and lay various shades of blue eggs. They come in both a large and bantam variety. Eight colors are officially recognized for poultry shows by the American Poultry Association: Black, Blue, Blue Wheaten, Brown Red, Buff, Silver, Wheaten and White.

In spite of the Ameraucana's long history, it is correct and accurate to say that the “AMERAUCANA” is “America’s most newly recognized APA/ABA Standard Breed.” It wasn't accepted until 1980! As you may know, a breed is NOT a BREED until the APA or ABA say it’s a “BREED”.

Just an interesting bit of science; There has been a definite relationship established between the “Pea Comb” gene and the “Blue Egg” gene. Both these genes have been shown to be carried on the same chromosome, and are thus closely related! In 'most' cases a bird that has a pea comb will lay a blue or blue based egg.

This wonderful blue egg laying chicken breed was developed in the U.S.A.  in the 1970s.  When developing the Ameraucanas, breeders wanted a meatier dual purpose poultry breed, rather than the less vigorous blue egg laying Araucanas imported from South America.

There are a number of colours of Ameraucana.  American Poultry Association (APA) approved colours are Black, Blue, Blue Wheaten, Brown Red, Buff, Silver, Wheaten & White.

We have Blue Wheaten. Wheatens the friendliest by far.  A true pet chicken.

Temperament

The temperament on these gorgeous Wheaten Ameraucana chickens is very pleasant.  They are gentle, calm, docile and friendly when free-ranging.  Surprisingly, when in confinement they are quite flighty, but calm down and approach for attention down after a minute or so.

In a mixed flock of heritage breeds, the wheaten Ameraucanas are in the lower and middle area in the pecking order.  They can be quite timid and shy with the other hens.

Other breeds will lay them in secret nests in order to hatch them but not the Wheaten Ameraucanas.

The Ameraucana roosters are not overly aggressive.  They are fairly kind to the hens and one rooster can be in with as little as five hens for a long period of time without harming the hens.  The cockerals are vigilant for predators when free-ranging.

Temperament varies a lot between breeding lines and between breeding flocks, so ask about temperament when buying your chicks or adult chickens.  Ours are from Paul Smith from Gainsville, TX, President of the Southwest Chapter of the Ameraruca Breeders Club.

Breed Characteristsics

The Wheaten Ameraucana chickens have a small pea comb which is excellent in extremely cold climates.  This means it is a very cold hardy bird.

The creamy white fluffy beard and muffs on the hens is attractive when clean.  The roosters have a black beard and the classic red/black/green feathers.  Ameraucanas should have no feathering on legs, tufts and beards are  must have for showing at an APA show.

Adults should weigh 6 1/2  pounds for males and 5 1/2  pounds for females.  The APA Standard of Perfection had more information on these and many other accredited poultry breeds.  The Ameraucana Breeders Club has more information and an amazing forum.

We have fertile hatching eggs, chicks, juveniles and on occasion grown stock for sale. We strive to supply the highest quality birds by allowing daily free ranging, never use hormones, steroids or antibiotics in our food sources.  They have available fresh clean water  and alfalfa daily. They are happy birds and a big part of our lives.

Wheaten and Blue Wheaten are two of the very few colors of Ameraucanas that you can interbreed and still get the same colored purebred babies. As such, our Wheaten and Blue Wheatens are kept together.

For hatching eggs we cannot sell specificities of one color. We do not guarantee hatching rates as we have no control once they leave our door. Hatching rates will vary due to incubation and humidity control methods, travel time and temperatures, handling, and other outside influences that we cannot control. We will replace any broken or damage eggs upon arrival with documented proof of damage. We usually send more than ordered to allow for shipping damages.
